A Very Cold December

Dear friends and strangers of Neerekshe,
We all come to the stable this season
Greetings to you ! A lot has gone on since we last wrote to you.
The BORE-WELL is still the same only that we have had a new 1 H.P pump that sucks out water till 25 ft. We were not able to retrieve the earlier pipe and pump, since it got snapped and has fallen at the bottom, somewhere close to the water source, although not hindering the water spring . Some of the villagers shocked us by telling that someone had cut the pipe, but it turned out that it wasn’t cut but it snapped. We are looking for a new bore well pump which will enable us to pump water upto 170 ft atleast. We at Neerekshe are praying for a miracle that God would provide the money to buy this Pump and install it so that we do not suffer any more without adequate water.
At KALMALA ,the neighbouring village, the COMPUTER courses are going well. The first batch of students will complete their first term soon. We are happy, 40 students are going to pass out .
Dr. Luke is starting the new MEDICAL clinic in Kalmala. We have found a centrally located place and have rented it for the medical work so that it will provide medical help to the whole village and the neighboring villages. Luke will be the first qualified Doctor in the village.
Today we painted the Muranpur Church “the cow-shed church’ after renovating it and having made more place for people to sit inside. We hope to get the place electrified so it can also be used in the night as a chapel and a sleeping area.
The Christmas programs in Muranpur are scheduled for Dec 24th and 25th apart from a small program scheduled in the outreach centre,KALMALA.

Have a Happy Christmas and a blessed year ahead!

ON NO-VEMBER

On November 5th it was Swenya Sampath Kumari's birth day. She was my youngest sister who passed away on 12th March 1994. Lived an awesome life. The few lines written in her diary dated 24th February 94

"...I got up now and I am writing, but the rashes are still there, but they don’t bother me too much... because Jesus is saying 'My Grace is sufficient for you'. Isn't it lovely that we have God's Grace more than rashes, so I trust Jesus..".

Lines leave Impressions

Neerekshe, going through a hard phase, especially financially.

We praise God for the sunflower sale, which helped us pay for the expenses on the work here.
The practice for the Christmas program have started and the children are learning many songs and dances.
The KALMALA Study Center is going great, we have more than 40 students attending the COMPUTER and ENGLISH SPEAKING class.

Our BORE_ WELL is under repair now for more than 1 month . After getting it repaired we would be happy to have a new Bore-well done too.

Updates till 2nd sept 07

Dear Friends of Neerekshe,

Well its almost a month from the time I updated the blog.

August was a month of many beginnings . Sharon Ruth and Sukumar (trustee members) and Charis their new born had visited the work and inaugurated the computr cente and a study center in the near by village Kalmala. We have a regular of 35 students from the government school.

At the same time the school is improving in its standard, and is being recognized in the neghibouring villages.

On 7th September we hosted a government program for 30 schools; the program was called _ “Prathiba Karanji” which means ‘Fountain of Talent’

Put it in other words- Talent search. Gladys Peter opened with sharing God’s word to more than 500 children, after the talent search through out the day then it was time for the main program and prize distribution then the government officials came and honored 5 best head teachers from government schools.

Right now we have my friend who studied in South India Biblical Seminary is staying with us Gamaliel, he will be as an evangelist.

The hostel work is just picking up, not much we still haven’t finished the foundation, but we are hoping it will be done soon.

The good news is that we will be starting a Rural Industrial Training Center in Muranpur. We will be starting 4 trades – welding, Electrical, Fitter and Diesel Mechanic. This will help many young people to learn trades and stand on their own legs – to be independent – to come out of poverty.

Finally to note that there is more to life…………….

Independence Day

Last week when I met with a group of young children asking them questions on Independence, the reply was, freedom with boundaries.
As India celebrated its 60th Independence day on Aug 15th, it is good to see that it has opened our eyes to development. And that’s what exactly is happening in Muranpur too.

The children celebrated this important day.The chief guest was the head master of the Government Primary School. The Indian flag was unfurled on that occasion. The children had put up a cultural show which was witnessed by parents and well-wishers. Children looked bright in their colorful costumes. Prizes too were distributed to those who had won during sports day function on the previous day.Every child received sweets before they left the school premises.

On the other hand the Hospital is getting cleaned up; you can have a look at the pictures.

Another good news is that we were able to bring Bheemaraya who is POLIO patient to Bangalore for his calipers . Along with him none of his family members were willing to come to Bangalore ,to help him in the hospital ,so we asked one of our teacher Mustafa who is also a polio patient to come with us , In the hospital Mustafa also was able to show himself to a good doctor and he was suggested for a calipers too. We gave orders for calipers for both and will be ready on 28 of this month .

The 500 saplings planted by our school children are growing well .

Your support is not forgotten, we are indebted to that. Keep us in your prayers.

Flash Floods at Neerekshe

Dear Friends of Neerekshe

Today I was sitting in my office and working. later in the afternoon I went with the boys to cut some thorn bushes for the plants that were newly planted, so that the cattle won’t eat them. Since we had bought 550 various kinds of plants.

After some time it started to rain and after 2 hours it left a trail of destruction on Neerekshe Land.

At the hospital, a retaining wall built to stop the water from flowing inside. But due to the force of the water the wall collapsed and the water gushed into the hospital and was filled in just 1 minute. The bridge to the school is also damaged.

After the rain stopped we have put the water pump on so we can remove the water.

What we need is your suggestions, thoughts and ideas on how we can solve these matters.

This is the 7th flood

Keep us in your prayers

"to bring life to the full"...

History and Activities of the Trust

Muranpur is a village in the interior of North Karnataka, about an hours bus ride from the nearest provincial town. It has a population of about 2000 people who live in abject poverty, being an agricultural community and dependent on erratic rainfall for their crops. This area has already been designated as a draught-prone area and has very little option for alternate economic activity. Given the generally poor state of the community, 90% of existing wealth resides in the higher caste and 70% of the families of lower caste live below the poverty line. In early 2000, a government surveyor was sent to the district and his report indicated that the situation in this community was unsatisfactory, with existence below “third world” standards. Due to the lack of stable economic activities and the resultant poverty and neglect, most of the inhabitants of this village suffer from perennial malnutrition, while the children suffer from retarded mental and physical development. There is no medical facility of even the primary level and the nearest medical center is 20 kilometers away from the village. The residents have no access to any modern mode of transportation due to lack of funding, and medical emergencies are handled by the village bullock cart. Diarrhea, influenza, gastro-enteritis, and skin diseases are common problems that go untreated. There is no sanitation, no toilets, and no access to potable drinking water. The Managing Trustee, Mr. Peter Shadrack, was born in this village. Despite the depressed situation he and his family faced, his father converted to Christianity and thus Peter Shadrack was educated in a mission school in Raichur. He grew up to become a science teacher, and after ten years of teaching he joined the Church in full time work for the poor of his village and the surrounding areas. He started by providing food and shelter to those in need from his area.

Social Awareness and Empowerment

The Trust also sees the need in this community for a general improvement in knowledge about life in the 21st century. Due to the racial imbalance whereby a minority of people belong to the upper caste and more than 70% of the population belong to the lower caste, a large group in this village are discriminated against according to age-old traditions that make up the racial divide. Knowledge about their rights, combined with education and awareness about various aspects of life would definitely change the social fabric of the village. A successful model could then be replicated in other areas of the state that suffer the same fate of poverty and backwardness. Presently the trustees try to organize meetings of women such as “mums & toddlers” for awareness about child care, health, and sanitation. Similar community meetings on topics of interest are organized for the men. With additional funding, the Trust will be able to put up a community center that can take care of such needs, as well as organize important awareness meetings regarding the environment and water conservation.
